BRAINY NAME HERE’S WHY WE CALL OURSELVES NEOCORTEC

The name of our company is a mix of the words “neocortex” and “technology” – for a reason.

Of course you know what Technology means. And you may be familiar with the concept of the Neocortex. In short, it is a vital part of the human brain, home to a range of functions, such as language and learning. Brain researchers are still fairly uncertain as to how exactly the brain works and which specific functions are being performed by its different parts. Just as explorers centuries ago travelled into the unknown to discover uncharted territory, brain researchers have set out to discover the uncharted territory of our minds, aiming to produce a precise atlas of the brain.

Much is still unknown, but researchers are fairly certain, that the Neocortex – also called Grey Matter – is the home of abilities unique to our species, like language processing and complex social behaviour. The Neocortex also plays an important role in sleep, memory and learning. It is believed that our ancestors

gradually developed a larger Neocortex due to pressures for closer cooperation and competition, and for more developed social skills and more complex behaviour. Humans have the highest ratio of the size of the Neocortex compared to the rest of the brain (60:1).

Neurons, the computing elements of the brain, are an important part of the electrochemistry of the Neocortex. Neurons communicate through “wireless” networks inside the brain.

To us, the networking nature of the brain seems an intriguing metaphor to use for our technology of thousands of nodes communicating, changing, adapting and learning while transmitting data.

So that is why we chose the name NeoCortec – a brainy name for new wireless mesh network technology.

ABOUT NEOCORTEC

NeoCortec was founded in 2007 with the aim of developing and patenting several innovations related to Wireless Sensor Networks. The founders realized early on that there was a lack of new thinking and research in the area of Wireless Sensor Networks – seemingly all efforts hitherto were based on methods related to IP protocols.
The founders had maintained that IP protocols were not applicable to the field of Wireless Sensor Networks. They claimed that there existed the possibility of making large scale routing protocols function in real time, thus without network managers etc., and all the while dramatically reducing power consumption.

Therefore, today, NeoCortec is a supplier of the world’s smallest ultra-low-power bi-directional wireless mesh network modules.

The modules come with the proprietary NeoCortec Protocol Stack, which is the result of the research and development activities during the early phase of the company.NeoCortec is based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. NeoCortec is owned by the Danish Private Capital Fund, A/S Holger Petersen Holding. A/S Holger Petersen Holding has achieved an AAA credit rating from Dun & Bradstreet.
